Sunday, 11:59 PM. June Park stays late to close one last overtime ticket at Meridian Ledger — Employee 013, a woman who worked all 168 hours of the week and was absent for every one of them. Then the overhead announcement calmly asks all Night Operations staff to report to Floor 13. Meridian occupies floors eight through twelve. The brass directory has always skipped thirteen.

Inspect desks, phones, refrigerators, and personnel files. Every finding goes into the case log. Every choice is recorded permanently — the Auditor keeps every version of you that signed.
