2:14 in the morning at a residential hotel nobody has renovated since the eighties. You are the night auditor, which means the job is to be awake.

A woman walks in out of the rain without hurrying, puts cash on the counter, and asks not to be written in the book. She is not running from the police — she is running from a man who finds it restful knowing where she spends money. At twenty to four, that man walks through the same doors and asks you a question.
